I started out building a family tree. Names, dates, who married who — a photo if you were lucky. Then one day I looked at what I'd made — and it was a skeleton. It tells you a person existed. It doesn't tell you who they were.

Because what you actually miss isn't the date on a box. It's the voice. The way they told a story you'd heard a hundred times — and you still leaned in.

My parents are gone now. And I keep coming back to the same thought: if I'd had this while they were still here, I'd have just hit record. At the kitchen table. All those ordinary afternoons. I'd have their voices — their stories, in their own words. Instead, those memories left with them.

That's the moment Rootkin changed. The tree was never the point. The voices were.

So you don't start with a form. You start with a question — and you press record. Rootkin holds the story, and the family grows around it. Every branch, full of someone you can actually hear.
